A disturbing incident at Columbine High School in Colorado has come to light. A social studies teacher, Leann Kearney, was found to have engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a 17-year-old female student. School officials, including counselors and the principal allegedly assisted in concealing this relationship from the student's parents. Furthermore, the school district reportedly helped the student declare herself homeless, which allowed her to move in with Kearney. This deception was discovered when the student’s mother found thousands of calls and text messages between her daughter and Kearney.
Despite the mother’s attempts to intervene, school officials dismissed her well-founded concerns. It took two years of pressure from the mother for Kearney to lose her teaching license. The district has since apologized and claims to have changed its policies, but the principal remains employed at Columbine. This case raises questions about accountability in our school systems and the people who are tasked with protecting students from abuse by those in positions of power and trust.
