Authorities have charged Alec Hegge with multiple felonies related to alleged sex crimes against children, including child molesting and possession of child pornography. Police claim that one of his victims was an infant. Hegge worked as a Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) at a local center which provides Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy to children with autism. At this time, it is unknown if any of Hegge’s clients at the ABA center were victims.
“Few things are more disgusting than people who exploit and abuse the most vulnerable among us—especially children and people with disabilities,” said attorney Tom Blessing. According to Blessing, there has been a disturbing increase in predators targeting victims who are defenseless or cannot tell people that they’ve been abused. “I get several calls a week from parents whose kids have been groomed or sexually assaulted by an adult caregiver, whether it’s a teacher, a coach or provider who works with people with disabilities.” Blessing said that many cases are difficult to prove because the victim is non-verbal, does not realize that she’s been abused, or simply does not tell anyone. In some cases, adults don’t even believe the victim was abused. “Sexual predators know this, so they choose their victims accordingly,” Blessing said.
According to Blessing, in this case technology played a key role in leading members of the Child Exploitation Task Force to making an arrest. “Groomers and abusers can’t resist the temptation to have child porn and online interactions with people which often provide investigators with enough evidence to charge them.”
The sexual abuse team of attorneys at Massillamany Jeter & Carson is actively investigating allegations against Hegge to evaluate potential claims for civil liability. If you believe your child was victimized or have any information about this story, please call 317/576-8580.
