According to MJC partner and education attorney Tom Blessing, this story highlights some of the abuse inflicted on students with disabilities at school: "We've seen a disturbing increase in the number of restraints and seclusions of children by school staff. In many cases, they are being put in seclusion as a form of punishment and kept there for excessive periods of time--even when the supposed risk of danger has dissipated. I've seen kids placed in seclusion for hours, denied access to a restroom and fallen asleep. It's hard to believe that these flagrant violations of civil rights occur on a regular basis in schools across the country, but they do."
